The very first step in the Preserve South workflow is to conduct a “chain of custody” inspection of our client media shipments. We verify all of the contents against the shipping records to-the-letter, verify the safe arrival of contents, and then store all shipping containers for the media’s return. Only then, do we start our Film Digitization process.

We begin with a careful inspection of client media prior to transfer. Preserve South technicians place each reel on an inspection table, where the reels receive new cores, are leadered and spliced, as needed. Any film showing vinegar syndrome or shrinkage is noted (and further options for restoration considered with the client), while hand cleaning is performed, using either velvets or Solvon, as necessary.

Our film scanning technicians utilize a LaserGraphics 5K ScanStation (sprocket-less) system to scan each reel as a flat DPX sequence, while preserving maximum dynamic range. The 5K sensor is utilized on all projects, regardless of delivery specs, to achieve the highest quality image. Our colorist then loads the DPX sequence into a Black Magic DaVinci Resolve color correction system to adjust levels as needed using a Good Light transfer making color correction and density changes where needed within the clip. Our process involved playing through each file to determine where significant changes need to be addressed. The goal is to produce a more consistent, viewable experience, but not a scene-by-scene color correction to ascribe a particular look. Once the films are scanned and color corrected, master and derivative file specs are met by using either Resolve, FFmpeg or Telestream Vantage.

Preserve South conducts rigid quality control standards throughout and after the digitization process. All encoding operations will be conducted in clean, dust-free environments. Operators verify that each file name has been entered correctly and that each file has gone through a 3-point spot check. A lock-tight QC protocol allows us to guarantee that every Preserve South client will received the highest quality results every time.
